Thursday 28th May: Diane Abbott and David Lammy – both Labour Party candidates for London Mayor – came to London Met for a discussion about the future of London (organised by Esther Murray in the School of Psychology). Another panelist was Christian Wolmar, a journalist who is also standing for mayor.

Diane Abbott and David Lammy both spoke out against inequality and the use of zero hours contracts; both had previously signed UCU’s petition against job cuts at the university. Christian Wolmar was given a rousing round of applause when he argued in favour of stronger trade unions as part of the necessary fight against inequality.

Fact: The London Mayor receives a salary of about £144,000. This is about two-thirds the salary of London Met’s Vice-Chancellor, who receives approximately £240,000 whilst employing large numbers of staff on zero-hours contracts.

In solidarity,
The UCU Coordinating Committee
