Sign up for: The Second Convention on Higher Education
You may have heard about the Green Paper for Higher Education. This document, on which consultation has now closed, poses a major threat to this country’s public universities. Some of what is currently happening, or proposed, at London Met (and which wasn’t in the Strategic Plan consultations) – such as management observation of teaching – can be traced to this document.
In essence, the document makes it easier for private providers to enter and compete in the education “marketplace”. This will destabilise many institutions, especially the post-92s and London Met specifically. Another major strand in the Green Paper is the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), by which universities will be ranked for their quality on teaching. The Green Paper lays out a great deal of detail about how this will all work, with the exception of the crucial information about what will be measured and how!
UCU are holding a second convention on higher education to discuss this threat to public universities. We encourage as many people as possible to attend, which you can do by following the links here.
