No to job cuts and trade union victimisation September 2016

We wish to thank so much our colleagues that in the last week have sent us their solidarity messages. Your support really makes a difference. Here are some:

Good afternoon,

On behalf of the branch executive I want to express our solidarity fo London Met colleagues in their dispute with university management.

Ron Mendel, Northampton UCU Branch Chair

__________

Solidarity to our comrades in London Met. We will show our support on the 29th.

UCU City of Liverpool College

__________

Dear Mark, David and everyone at London Met,

in Newcastle, as elsewhere, we have been watching with horror at what is happening at London Met. It is disgraceful how the management has been treating its staff, especially the victimisation of trade union representatives. It is clearly an attempt to lead the way towards privatising higher education in England and Wales, and we at Newcastle admire your courage and persistence in fighting against it, not only for yourselves, but on behalf of all of us. As we learned in our fight against research performance management targets last year, solidarity from other academics and UCU branches is important, as is publicity. Our branch’s committee sends our best wishes and full support, and we are doing our best to publicise your situation as well.

Best wishes

Bruce

Dear Mark and all at London Met,

The University of Liverpool had an OGM yesterday and we carried the following motion unanimously:

Motion in support of London Met:

London Metropolitan University is under attack. What’s happening there should be closely monitored by the rest of us in the HE sector, they are being used as a test case for the imposed privatisation of this sector.

Private companies are overseeing the re-structure of London Met, UCU and Unison reps are being victimised and dismissed, terms and conditions of staff are under threat and hundreds of staff are facing redundancy.

This branch notes the successful outcome of the ballot for industrial action and sends our solidarity and support to all members taking strike action in the coming weeks.

This branch commits to:

•       Support the call for an academic greylist of London Metropolitan University
•       Hold a lunchtime rally in support of London met strikes
•       Donate £150 to London met strike fund
•       Call on the NEC to agree that this dispute should be of national significance

<end of motion>

Please let your members know about this Mark and we’ll forward the donation asap.

Jo.

Hi David,

Hi,

On behalf of the University of Winchester Branch of UCU I would like to send a message of support to the Branch at London Met.

Stay strong.

All the best,

Mick Jardine, Branch Chair

__________

On behalf of UCU members at Chesterfield College, I would like to send you our full support and best wishes for your forthcoming strike action, and any subsequent action to defend your members against the proposed redundancies, and to reinstate UCU union reps Mark Campbell and David Hardman.

Your members should be congratulated on their resolve to fight the proposed loss of jobs and the victimisation of union reps as demonstrated by the strike ballot result. You have faced unrelenting attacks over many years but your commitment to safeguarding public higher education is a great example for all trade unionists who understand the importance of resisting the damaging changes this government and managers wish to inflict upon the sector.

In solidarity,

Allister Mactaggart, Branch Chair, Chesterfield College UCU

__________

Dear LMU and all,

Congratulations on your vote for action. Our branch committee meets next week and I am happy to ensure we raise the issue of greylisting and solidarity at it. It is crucially important for the whole union that we understand the wider significance of the redundancies and union busting taking place at LMU.

We have an institution which is being set up for privatisation in which the management are complicit. The opportunities for students and quality of the education produced by staff and students is irrelevant in the eyes of a management and government dogma which simply values the university in terms of pounds of income.

Carlo Morelli, Dundee UCU and NEC

__________

Dear comrades.

I wish you all the best in your fight against cuts and victimisations. No to the Tories education policies!

Mike Todd, retired UCU member, ex branch secretary Univ. Greenwich (Chatham Site)

___________

Dear London Met UCU,

I am emailing tooffer you my full support for your forthcoming strike action against the disgusting attack on jobs, terms& conditions at London Met.

I am a retired member of UCU from Bristol University, and from my reading of the dispute it is clear that your VC’s proposals (massively increased casualisation, hours going up from 550 per year 750 per year, complete erosion of the post 92 contract, students teaching students etc.) are designed to bring neoliberalism writ large into the Higher education sector, destroying any hope of a decent education for students at your institution, but also setting a very dangerous precedent for the rest of both Higher & Further education in general.

No doubt he is proud of his efforts, but on the ground I am sure you will have the support of all who working the sector & students whose aim is not just to get a paper qualification, but to open their minds, discuss & explore new ideas, to think about new subjects they have never encountered before etc. I wish you every success in your dispute.

Celia Hollingworth (UCU retired member, Bristol University)

__________

Hi all at London Met UCU

Solidarity in tomorrow’s strike action from Halesowen UCU here in the Midlands. The attack on staff, provision and representation at London Met goes hand in hand with the ongoing butchering of FE college provision and the attempted return to grammar schools – it is all about shutting working class people and other oppressed groups out of education.

Your fight is our fight. Good luck tomorrow

Rhiannon Lockley, Halesowen branch secretary and West Midlands chair, UCU

__________

HI, I am afraid I will be in work by 8am tomorrow so won’t be able to come to your picket line, but please see our message of solidarity. BW Jackie Applebee, Hon Sec, Tower Hamlets BMA Division.

“Tower Hamlets BMA stand with London Met UCU in their principled stand against mass redundancies and the victimisation of UCU reps Mark Campbell and David Hardman.

This Government are determined to undermine essential public services and deny ordinary people the right to a good education, good healthcare and good housing. We are disappointed that the junior doctors struggle did not generalise more widely and salute you for continuing your fight. ”

___________

Dear UCU London Met,

I am sending a message of solidarity to your union branch as you strike to defend jobs, union reps and higher education. You are sending a clear message that you are willing to fight against the victimisation of union reps and in defence of education for all and you have the full support of members in our branch. Solidarity!

Matthew Cookson, Branch secretary of UCU Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College

____________

Good luck with your strike tomorrow.
