Hi there,

this is just a quick e-mail from an ex Psychology Lecturer at London Met to express my shock at hearing about the news regarding the proposed redundancies and share my solidarity with Mark & David. It seems that union members and activists have deliberately been singled out for redundancy, and if that is the case, then this is a shocking display of naked victimization. I am sure we will be discussing this matter via our UCU CoCom at Brighton in due course, but please let me know in the meantime if there’s anything else we can do to help out and/or show support.
In solidarity,

Solidarity and all the best for a rapid reinstatement,

Dear Mark and David

this is an outrage. I recall the support LSBU UCU received from you and other LMU UCU officers in its various battles with the local management, notably over national pay bargaining, and send solidarity in your own current battle with what has proved, over many years, to be an inept (and frequently toxic) management. LSBU UCU will be represented at Wednesday’s meeting to discuss and plan how the union can defend what are, in my experience, some of its most dedicated and gifted branch officers.

I’m writing to you again to express our solidarity and our concern at the victimisation you and your colleagues Christina Paine and David Hardman have received at London Metropolitan University. As staff at a post-92 institution which also has a diverse student population, we are also concerned at the scale of redundancies at the university and its consequences for accessible education.

Dear David and Mark,

Here at Liverpool UCU we are appalled at the victimisation that your institution is directing at you. You have our full support and solidarity, if there anything you would like us to do in aiding your fight please do not hesitate to ask. In some ways you could look at this as a compliment to your trade union activities. Management do not victimise weak branches or complicit activists. It is clear by standing up for your branch, for your institution and for public education you have shaken them and that is why this attack has happened. We will stand with you to resist this and will certainly raise your cases with our branch from whom I expect you will receive the same support as from the branch committee.

To London Met UCU

I am writing to express the support of Tower Hamlets UNISON Branch for your campaign against the victimisation, by selection for redundancy, of UCU Branch Chair Mark Campbell and UCU Branch Secretary David Hardman.

We have joined many of your pickets and protests over the last several years and are well aware that this is the latest in a long line of attacks on union reps by a management intent on shrinking London Met. This is at one with government policy that seeks to denigrate the role of a university which has drawn students overwhelmingly from working class and diverse backgrounds.

The most recent educational vandalism from the University hierarchy is the closure of  Sir John Cass Art school, despite the overwhelming support for its’ retention in East London and in the Arts Community.

For this management removing Mark and David by redundancy – as they previously did with Max Watson – is part of attempting to remove resistance to their wider assault on the ethos of the university.

Please let us know of any way in which we can offer support.

In solidarity

Hello Mark and Comrades,

I am so sorry to learn of the antics of Senior Management at London Met. I am pleased with the response of UCU members in condemning the victimisation of UCU activists and for following a direction that will threaten the very existence of the London Met.

I have signed the various petitions and have circulated the information you posted to my various social media contacts as well as friends and my local MPs.

This is what I stated in the petition I signed:

“Everyone must say NO to victimisation. Our activists are fighting for their students, the community, their jobs and to ensure that Education is not subjected to marketisation, privatisation and exploitation of workers, students and the community. Education is a human and democratic right. Defend our activists, defend jobs, defend education. Support our staff, students and the community.”

I hope that the entire trades union and Labour movement as well as student and community groups will come to the defense of activists and colleagues who are simply fighting for education, students, the community and their jobs.

I am sorry to say this, but the trade union movement must wake up to this serious challenge regarding victimisation, that will get worse as this Government imposes its ideology of marketisation, privatisation and cuts in further and higher education. They have already destroyed much of adult and community education. We need a union strategy that is designed to be pro-active and not just reactive. We need the whole movement to work together including the UCU, TUC, Labour Party and other sympathetic parties to work together to defend education.

Best wishes for you, your fellow comrades at London Met and your family.

You all have our total support.

Regards

Jim
